Microphone Will Not Work - Windows - Google Hangouts (add to knowledgebase)

Problem
A microphone will not work (using Google Hangouts)

Operating System = Windows

Symptom
Google Hangouts has a slash across the microphone (and redirects to have the computer fix it)


Solution
  1. start
  2. control panel
  3. search "sound" (control panel)
  4. recording
  5. click device (probably headset or speaker)
  6.  levels  
  7. ensure the "speaker" button is not turned off (pix below)
